Races of Aeden

There are 10 main races on Aeden, all variants of the basic Abiel (human) species. There are no elves, no dwarves, no other intelligent races. Some other minor races exist that are significant variations on the Abiel, or human, norm, these are mostly the results of wizardly meddling in the natural course of life (e.g. giants).

These races form the basic cultural building blocks from which the various nations, states and power blocs of Aeden eventually form. We´re looking for help in thinking about the next phase of history where we expect to have about forty different nations. You can help us by giving feedback through our online form.

Under each racial group there is a series of five rated stats that measure the raw potential of that race´s culture. These include:

Resources
The availability of useable resources in that geographic area (1=scarce, 5=average, 10=abundant).

Metalworking
   The knowledge of metalworking (1=tin, 5=bronze, 10=steel).

Agriculture
The sophistication of the methods of agriculture (1=hunting, 5=basic farming, 10=irrigation etc.).

Architecture
The knowledge of architecture and engineering (1=caves/tents, 5=brick houses, 10=stone cathedrals).

Magic
The level of magic use (1=rare, 5=some wizards, 10=everyone knows a wizard).

There are also indicators of the real world equivalent of that race (see note), the approximate number of people in that racial group, the location of those people on Aeden (see map below) and a description of their race´s interactions with other races and their environment.

Real World: Greeks
Population: 900,000 approx.
Location: SE of the Infinite Deep

With a strong rural base, the Attians have created several large city cultures, the beginning of the Decapolis. The Attians are also fine inland seamen, and have created much of the trade around the Infinite Deep. Some of their explorers have sailed around Aeden´s outer shores and discovered the Caldolian island people.

Location: NE of the Infinite Deep, in the Great Northern mountain range.

The Bellos mountain folk are known for their sturdy high holdings and ample herds. Life is busy in the mountains. so wizards are rare, but most holdings boast some priest. Trade of ore to Erethius and Attia brings luxuries and high-quality metal goods.

Real World: Polynesian
Population: 100,000 approx.
Location: On the isle of Caldolia, SE of Aeden

Caldolia is home to one of the smallest people groups in Aeden. The island´s abundance and small population has meant that there is little need for more than basic farming techniques. Instead the Caldolians are known for their arts, architecture and culture. As fine deepwater sailors they may start to give the Attians a run for their gold in trade. They have a well developed noble system, based on mutual trust between the nobles and commoners.

Competent farmers and fishermen, the Erethians are unsurpassed in the development of metal weapons and armour. As a result their young men are much in demand as mercenaries (as much for their weapons as for their skills) and so further development of agriculture, architecture or magic is suspended whilst riches may be had from foreign wars.

Location: SW of the Infinite Deep, in the Fire Mountains

The Golodhel live in a highly volcanic area that yielda an abundance of food, gems, wood and other non-metal resources. Accomplished farmers, the Golodhel rely on wooden products with occaisonal imported metal tools. There are few wizards in Golodhel, due to the many priests and close relationship these people enjoy with Adonai. Food and wood are major trade items, used with the Attians and Erethians to bring in metal goods and mercenaries to help fight off the Irani.

Population: 600,000 approx.
Location: W of the Infinite Deep on the steppes.

Tough horsemen, the small Irani tribesmen cover the western steppes like locusts. Rough tents, herding, gathering and little metal makes the lives full of struggle. However, the people prosper, sometimes at the expense of their neighbours, the Golodhel and Erethians. They make up for their lack of metal weapons with skillful horsemanship and plenty of shamans.

Real World: Asian
Population: 900,000 approx.
Location: SW of the Infinite Deep, past the Fire Mountains

An isolated, warlike race, the Lirae have been driven to fight amongst themselves for scarce resources. More than any other people they are driven by conquest. Isolation alone, has protected the more abundant sections of Aeden from these peoples wrath. As a result of their lack, their wizards and priests have pursued dark arts and slavery has become the accepted cultural norm for most of their people. They are a people amongst whom survival depends upon power.

A tall, strong people, the Mai are nevertheles small in numbers. They live as farmers on the expansive plains of northern Aeden. Despite being expert metalworkers and farmers, they look to trade with the Ollar to bring in precious metal ores and necessary sea products (e.g. salt).

Real World: Negro
Population: 400,000 approx.
Location: E of the Infinite Deep, in the Forests at the End of the World

The Manuka are supreme wizards, but isolated from the rest of Aeden´s peoples by distance and the dense Forests at the End of the World. The mildness of their climate, and ready access to magic has led them to live in harmony with the forest. Many druids live amongst these people, and their preference is for houses made of living trees to ones of dead stone or brick.

Real World: Nordic
Population: 500,000 approx.
Location: N of the Infinite Deep, around the shores of the Freezing Sea

Hardy seamen from the cold shores of the Freezing Sea, these people know little of metalwork, relying on their trade with the Mai for essential items. As expert harvesters of the sea´s abundance they lack little, even in the coldest months when the Freezing Sea lives up to its name. They have many wizards, mainly specialising in sea magics, and fine ports to keep their ships safe during the frozen winter months.

Real World Equivalent
By real world equivalent I don´t mean that the Aeden race is an exact match culturally for that race, but rather that their physical appearance matches those people. For example the Manuka are more Elven in their cultural worldview than like any real world negro population. I am also aware that the real world `races´ I use as examples may not actually be separate races in a true anthroplogical or biological sensem but they should give you a `feel´ for the physical look of the people.  (back)
